A Must-Try in Asakusa: Kameju’s Famous Dorayaki –The Perfect Japanese Souvenir

When visiting Asakusa, one of Tokyo’s most iconic neighborhoods, most travelers head straight to Sensoji Temple and Nakamise Street. But just steps away from the famous Kaminarimon Gate, there’s a sweet treat you don’t want to miss: the legendary dorayaki from Kameju.

What Is Dorayaki?

Dorayaki is a classic Japanese confection made of two fluffy pancake-like cakes filled with sweet red bean paste (anko). It’s a favorite across Japan and is famously loved by the anime character Doraemon!

Why Kameju's Dorayaki Is So Special

While dorayaki can be found all over Japan, Kameju’s version is truly unique. The cakes are extra thick, incredibly soft, and melt-in-your-mouth tender—more like a sponge cake than the usual thin dorayaki. The filling comes in two varieties:

  • Kuro-an (black bean paste) – sweet and slightly chunky

  • Shiro-an (white bean paste) – smooth and creamy

Both are subtly sweet and perfectly balanced.

Be Prepared for a Line

Kameju is a beloved local shop with a long history, and their dorayaki is in high demand. It’s not unusual to see a line outside the store, especially on weekends. We recommend visiting in the morning if you want to secure your dorayaki before they sell out!

A Great Souvenir from Tokyo

Each dorayaki is individually wrapped, making it easy to take home as a gift. The packaging is elegant, and the treat itself is a wonderful way to share a taste of traditional Japan with your friends and family.

Keep in mind that dorayaki is best enjoyed within 2–3 days, so plan accordingly if you're traveling.
