What is an Iaito?

An Iaito is a specialized practice sword used in the Japanese martial art of Iaido (the art of drawing the sword).


An Iaito is a specialized practice sword used in the Japanese martial art of Iaido (the art of drawing the sword). While it looks nearly identical to a real Japanese sword (Shinken), it is specifically designed to be non-sharpened for safety during training.


Most Iaito are crafted from a high-quality zinc-aluminum alloy. This material is intentionally used because it cannot hold a sharp edge, meaning it is not classified as a weapon under Japanese law and does not require a permit.
